THE TRAIL
Ready for an adventure? Take a hike on our private mountain trail! Do you love hiking, but are tired of the crowds? Try this one! Follow the blaze orange marks, from the driveway, then to your right, up past the chalet for some awesome views. Then climb up the mountain, through the rhododendron, to the ridge. Follow the ridge south for another great viewpoint, then on back to the amazing rock formations. This is a good turnaround point, unless you're really up to some rugged hiking! If you are, follow the trail down, and then back up a steep, steep climb to another ridge. From here, you will be looking down on the highest point of the Foothills Parkway! This is one of the highest points in Wears Valley! Then, follow the trail, down down to a trickling creek, with small waterfalls (except in dry seasons). Then, across the creek, through some more rocks, and back to the Chalet!
This trail is extremely rugged, and mostly unimproved, with only the orange blazes for guides. Only Experienced hikers should attempt hiking the whole trail. There is over 1300' of elevation gain, in the approximately 6 tenth mile long trail. (For comparison, Clingman's Dome trail gains 300') This trail is through wild country, and meetings bears or rattlesnakes are possibilities. Enjoy it carefully and responsibly! Allow 2-3 hours to hike the entire trail.
THE AREA
The BlackBeary Chalet is nestled all by itself on 25 acres, surrounded by mountains and nature. Yet it is but a short drive to all the attractions nearby. It is less than 15 minutes drive to the Metcalf Bottoms entrance to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park and approximately 30 minutes to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, depending on destination and traffic.
THE ADVANTAGES
The BlackBeary Chalet is the privately owned and operated. In the unlikely even that issues should arise, you will be communicating directly with the owner. We commit to doing everything in our power to resolve issues immediately. Ensuring an enjoyable stay for our guests is our highest priority!
ONE MORE THING. DEFINITELY READ THIS!
The serenity of this location, and its awesome mountain views, comes at the price of a long and VERY steep, but manageable, concreted driveway. (Consider it part of the adventure!) Many loaded maxi vans fail to make it up, but there is a small parking lot at the bottom of the drive, if needed. Renters will be required to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle for any stays from October through April. Also, we highly recommend having travel insurance during these months. If you have any question, feel free to contact your host.
